Washington University in St. Louis is a place where people matter and serious work is done. WashU is a community of individuals inspired to work together to develop big ideas and tackle challenging problems. With approximately 45 teacher education majors, class sizes are small so students get quality individualized instruction and supervised teaching experiences in area schools. 

Washington University is a private institution established in 1853 in St. Louis, MO. Teacher Education is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Education. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate teacher certification programs for elementary, middle school, and secondary education in 23 subject areas. Most graduates are employed quickly after completion while some go on to pursue advanced graduate studies.

Are you interested in becoming a classroom teacher? The teacher education program at WashU is designed to prepare highly qualified teachers who positively impact students in K-12 school systems as well as their professional colleagues. Not only will you develop content mastery and teaching excellence, you will also engage in reflective practice, inquiry-based instructional approaches, social justice, and advocacy to meet the learning needs of all students in diverse classrooms and settings. The course of study includes meaningful fieldwork in schools where candidates engage with students, families, and other educators.

The four key program goals for graduates are: 1) to acquire the skills to provide high quality instructional experiences for diverse student needs across a wide spectrum of developmental levels and backgrounds; 2) to have a deep knowledge of the subjects they teach and understand thoroughly the teaching process; 3) to enact the role of teacher as an inquirer; and 4) to be proficient in all competencies defined in the standards and quality indicators required for certification by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Educator Preparation Division.
