Montreat College

About

Montreat College is an independent, Christ-centered, liberal arts institution that educates students through intellectual inquiry, spiritual formation, and preparation for a calling and a career. Set in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, our student body of about 530 pursues academic excellence with its 23 majors, and athletic excellence, with 17 NAIA varsity sports. Our classrooms boast a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio, creating tight-knit community and a personal learning environment. The Montreat College Teacher Education Program is designed to lead to Elementary licensure in 4 years. In the first two years, students take one education course each semester. During this time, the focus is on completing most of the general education core requirements and assisting transfer students to have a smooth transition. Both fall and spring semesters in year three focus on reading and math methods course content. Year four is our Professional Year and includes a year-long placement with a mentor teacher, following the co-teaching model. Student Teaching I in the fall semester consists of a half-day placement in the elementary classroom with additional relevant, online coursework. Student Teaching II in the spring semester continues the fall placement for a full day in the classroom with a seminar to provide additional support for edTPA and portfolio development.

Program Info

The mission of the Montreat College Teacher Education program is to prepare teachers to be leaders and innovators for 21st century learning in the classroom, school, and district. We teach the skills, knowledge, expertise, and support systems students will need to succeed in work, life, and citizenship. 21st century teacher leaders and innovators must engage all students in the learning process, providing equitable access for all students in all settings, in public or private schools, at home in the United States or abroad. Elementary education is a major that prepares students to teach in grades K-6. The program also prepares students for K-6 licensure exams and the edTPA, required for initial licensure in the state of North Carolina. Once completed, students are qualified to teach at public, private, and charter schools in North Carolina and overseas. The program includes 300 hours of clinical experience prior to student teaching, including focused field experiences connected to methods courses, professional service, and a professional year which includes a semester-long 200+ hour internship.
