Program Hallmarks
You will get the chance to experience teaching in the classroom in your first year as an education student. Drury University’s Introductory Practicum will allow you to get your feet wet, conduct observations in your content-area, and see what teaching is really all about. In your second or third year, after being admitted to the Teacher Education Program, you will take a mid-level practicum that will allow you to get into schools and, in some cases, start teaching a unit or two. Finally, Student Teaching is a final practicum: a semester-long job interview that will place you at the heart of the classroom, so you get teaching experience and graduate ready to enter the job market.
Drury values the preparation of teachers to address and incorporate all areas of diversity into the classroom. You will take a variety of courses designed to incorporate diversity–from the foundational course, Diversity & Social Justice in Education, to the methods course, Collaborative Classroom Environment, Drury assures that as a graduate, you are ready to create inclusive and diverse classrooms that represent and honor the experiences of your students.
Drury’s teacher education students partner with area schools and, for all three practicum experiences, you are paired with teachers who have at least 3 years of classroom experience. During your final semester in student teaching, you will have access to university coordinators, who monitor and address any areas for improvement that they notice.
Drury prides itself on being and maintaining certification from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). It is important to the Drury School of Education and Child Development that they provide the best education for our preservice teachers. The School of Education and Child Development administers a yearly survey to alumni that allows for feedback and continuous improvement of the program. Additionally, Drury analyzes data collected by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and uses it to create new classes, update current classes, and continue to offer the best teacher education it possibly can.
