When first thinking about a teacher preparation program, there are three primary options for your preparation pathway:
Complete your preparation program during your undergraduate education
Complete your preparation program after your undergraduate education via postgraduate studies (e.g. a master’s degree)
Complete the preparation program after your undergraduate, but right before teaching or while teaching
The majority of programs have you complete the preparatory coursework and fieldwork before teaching, but you can also find programs that train you while you are on the job.
Although not as frequent, there are also specialized pathways for military veterans, substitute teachers, or paraprofessionals already working in schools.
